Although the Cassini Italian Table Globe may look like an antique replica or vintage style reproduction with its deep, rich color and sturdiness, the structure actually supports a political world globe that has been updated by Zoffoli’s master cartographers, featuring the names of countries, capitals, cities, oceans, and rivers.
The 22 cm diameter globe sphere rests on four hand-turned legs of solid beech wood and a center pillar. The stand also features a walnut base shelf and equator ring.
Cassini’s sky blue globe ball, “azzure” in Italian, rotates and is encompassed by a beautiful calibrated wooden meridian.
The globe is named after Giovanni[a] Domenico Cassini, also known as Jean-Dominique Cassini, an Italian (naturalised French) mathematician, astronomer, and engineer. Cassini is known for his work in the fields of astronomy and engineering. He discovered four satellites of the planet Saturn and noted the division of the rings of Saturn. Cassini was also the first of his family to begin work on the project of creating a topographic map of France.
